Germany Bolsters Defense with $2.35 Billion Armored Vehicle Deal with Patria

In a landmark move for European defense integration, Germany has officially finalized a procurement contract valued at over €2 billion ($2.35 billion) with Finnish defense giant Patria. This massive agreement focuses on the acquisition of up to 876 Common Armored Vehicle Systems (CAVS), a 6×6 platform designed to become the backbone of modern European infantry mobility. The deal includes a firm initial order of more than €1 billion, signaling Berlin’s urgent commitment to modernizing its land forces amid a shifting global security landscape.

The acquisition is not a “one-size-fits-all” purchase; rather, it covers four distinct variants of the 6×6 vehicle. These configurations include specialized units equipped with Patria’s NEMO mortar turret and others featuring the Kongsberg Protector RS4 remote-controlled weapon station. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2026, directly supporting the German Army’s ambitious roadmap to reach full combat readiness by 2029.

Central to the deal is a robust technology transfer agreement designed to bolster Germany’s domestic defense industry. While the first units will be manufactured in Finland, local production is expected to kick off in 2027 through a strategic partnership with German firms FFG, JWT, and KNDS. This industrial teaming ensures that Germany maintains a high degree of security of supply and creates a sustainable maintenance ecosystem within its own borders.

The CAVS platform itself is a highly capable NATO-standardized vehicle, measuring 8 meters in length and capable of carrying a 9-ton payload. Powered by a 394-horsepower Scania diesel engine, it can reach speeds of 100 kilometers per hour with an impressive operational range of 700 kilometers. As Germany joins the program alongside Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, and most recently the UK and Norway, the CAVS initiative is rapidly evolving into one of the most successful multinational defense collaborations in recent history.
