At the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent made headlines not just for his economic insights, but for a pointed critique of California Governor Gavin Newsom. Bessent’s remarks came in response to Newsom’s earlier comments comparing President Donald Trump to a T-Rex, in which the governor warned that international leaders either “mate with him or he devours you,” and criticized global leaders for being “pathetic” in their dealings with the president.
“I could say Gavin Newsom is a Brontosaurus with a brain the size of a walnut,” Bessent told Politico in an interview, taking direct aim at Newsom’s recent T-Rex analogy. “And if you brought the knee pads, maybe that was for his meeting with Alex Soros.” The comment highlighted Bessent’s view that Newsom’s warnings about Trump’s aggressive negotiation style were overblown, while also casting a skeptical eye on the governor’s political connections and accomplishments.

Newsom’s T-Rex comparison, delivered earlier this week, framed the president as a predator and called out what he saw as complicity among world leaders. “I should have brought a bunch of knee pads for all the world leaders… handing out crowns and Nobel Prizes that are being given away… it’s just pathetic,” Newsom said, urging leaders to stand firm, act with principle, and uphold international respect. He also warned European leaders that failing to act decisively could leave them exposed, particularly as tensions rise over strategic issues like Greenland.

Despite the memorable dig, Bessent’s interview also touched on broader economic topics, including trade, tariffs, and the strategic reshoring of critical industries. He highlighted the positive contributions of U.S. trade policy under Trump, including billions in new investment, improved tariff balances, and increased manufacturing on American soil.
