FBI Director Kash Patel has initiated a sweeping purge of the bureau’s senior ranks, forcing out multiple field office leaders and other agents connected to high-profile investigations of former President Donald Trump, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Among those removed were the special agent in charge in Atlanta, the acting assistant director of the New York field office, and a former special agent in charge in New Orleans who had recently moved to another position. In Miami, as many as six agents were reportedly forced out over their roles in the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida estate where classified documents were stored. Others ousted were tied to the “Arctic Frost” investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
The number of departures remains unclear, and an FBI spokesperson declined to comment. The scale of the firings is virtually unprecedented for the bureau, which has long prided itself on independence and political neutrality.
These oustings follow Patel’s recent statements to conservative media outlets promising to remove anyone involved in authorizing payments to confidential sources who helped identify participants in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. They also come hours after former special counsel Jack Smith testified before Congress, defending his investigation into Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents. Republican lawmakers attacked Smith for alleged bias, while Trump called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to open an investigation into the former special counsel.

The FBI Agents Association has criticized the firings, saying they are improper in the absence of evidence of misconduct or other legitimate cause. Several previously fired agents, including Brian Driscoll, who had served as acting director before Patel’s confirmation, have filed lawsuits challenging their terminations.
This latest purge echoes Patel’s prior actions. He previously removed a dozen agents who had taken a knee during a racial justice protest in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. Even before Patel assumed leadership, the Trump Justice Department had already reshaped much of the bureau’s senior leadership in Washington.
Critics warn that Patel’s actions risk further politicizing the FBI, undermining its long-standing role as a nonpartisan law enforcement agency, and could have lasting effects on morale and public trust. Supporters argue the moves are necessary to cleanse the bureau of personnel they view as hostile to the Trump administration.
