Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi Says He Is Ready to Lead Iran, ‘We Must Unite Around the Common Goal of Overthrowing the Islamic Republic’

In a significant development amid ongoing nationwide unrest, exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi has publicly called for coordinated protests and stated his readiness to lead a political transition in Iran. His message marks a direct engagement with the protest movement and a call for unified action against the current government.

A Direct Appeal for Coordinated Action

In a video message addressed to the Iranian people on Tuesday, Pahlavi issued his first public call for protests since the latest wave of demonstrations began. He urged citizens to engage in simultaneous chanting at exactly 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, and Friday, January 9, whether from the streets or inside their homes. He emphasized that discipline and mass participation are “critical” to the movement’s success.

Pahlavi stated he had closely followed demonstrations over the past week, specifically highlighting protests in Tehran’s bazaars as a sign of growing resistance. He described a violent crackdown by the Islamic Republic but claimed that repeated large-scale gatherings had forced security forces to retreat in some cases and led to increased defections.

Kurdish Parties Call for a General Strike

Separately, in a move that sets Thursday as a potential focal point for dissent, seven Iranian Kurdish opposition parties issued a joint statement calling for a general strike on that day. The strike is intended to support nationwide protests and condemn the government’s actions in the Kurdish-majority provinces of Kermanshah and Ilam, as well as Lorestan.

The statement denounced the crackdown on demonstrations and the detention of protesters as a long-standing policy of the Islamic Republic. It called on political parties and civil organizations across Iran to take a “united and collective stance” by joining the strike.

The call was signed by the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, Kurdistan Free Life Party, Komala, Kurdistan Organization of the Communist Party of Iran, Revolutionary Komala of Toilers of Iranian Kurdistan, and the Kurdistan Organization of Khabat.

Pahlavi’s Stated Role and Vision for the Future

Outlining his position, Pahlavi’s message clarified his aspirations. “Shahzadeh has always said, and says today, that he does not consider himself a candidate for any position. He believes that the future political system of Iran should be determined by the free vote of the Iranian people. And whatever role the people assign to him in the future, he will accept it,” the statement conveyed.

It continued: “But today, his effort is to be a unifying leader for all Iranians, regardless of their political orientations, ideologies, or tendencies, to unite around the common goal of overthrowing the Islamic Republic and establishing a secular democracy in Iran.”

This combination of calls—from a prominent exiled figure and from organized internal opposition groups—signals a coordinated effort to amplify protest actions, setting the stage for a pivotal day of demonstrations and strikes across the country.
