Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries Says Greenland Has Nothing to Do With Improving American Lives: “Republican Extremists Are Obsessed With Greenland”

U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Saturday criticized what he called Republicans’ obsession with Greenland, questioning its relevance to improving Americans’ lives, following President Donald Trump’s renewed expressions of interest in acquiring the Danish territory.

In a post on the social media platform X, Jeffries wrote: “Republican extremists are obsessed with Greenland. What does any of this have to do with making your life better? Not a damn thing.”

Jeffries’ comments came a day after Trump told reporters at the White House that the United States would “do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not,” citing concerns that Russia or China could otherwise take control of the Arctic island. Trump, who has long advocated for U.S. ownership of Greenland for strategic and resource reasons, emphasized during a meeting with oil executives that a deal could be made “the easy way” but warned of pursuing it “the hard way” if necessary.

“If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor,” Trump said, adding that he was a “fan of Denmark” but questioned its historical claim to the territory. He also reiterated his support for NATO, claiming he had “saved” the alliance.

Trump’s remarks echo his first term in office, when he floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, a proposal that was swiftly rejected by Danish officials as “absurd.” Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark with a population of about 56,000, hosts a U.S. military base and is rich in natural resources, including rare earth minerals, which have drawn international interest amid climate change and Arctic melting.

Greenland’s leaders pushed back against Trump’s latest comments. The island’s premier has repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale and emphasized its sovereignty. Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod called the rhetoric “unhelpful” and affirmed Denmark’s commitment to its alliance with the U.S. while rejecting any notion of territorial transfer.

White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Jeffries’ statement. Trump has defended his Greenland interest as essential for national security, stating that ownership is preferable to lease agreements for defense purposes.

The president’s comments have sparked debate among allies, with some NATO members expressing concern over potential strains in transatlantic relations. Analysts note that while Greenland’s strategic location is undisputed, any forced action could violate international norms and provoke diplomatic backlash.
